Furazone Green is a combination of two or three Furan antibiotics, which have a good spectrum of action against bacterial infections in Koi, goldfish and pond fish and reasonably good absorption in fish. The “green” nomenclature is because the product contains these Furans, which are yellow, and a dose of Methylene Blue. The combination of the yellow and blue in the water results in a green that is nothing short of electric. This product is customarily available in the local pet shop in a capsule or powder format. Furazone Green achieves its greatest results when used as an eight hour bath according to label instructions on a daily basis, using a fresh solution daily. Do not treat in the main system because it may disable or impair the beneficial bacteria in the filter.
Factors that influence the dose of Furazone Green include the use of UV and Carbon. Both technologies will effectively remove [or neutralize] Furazone Green. The Furan antibiotics are NOT stable under ultra-violet radiation, including that produced by Mr. Sun.
The most important precaution to observe concerns the use of this compound in the main aquarium. Its effect on beneficial filter bacteria is significant. In personal communication with some associates at the wholesale level, I am aware of systems that have become ‘immune’ to the effects of the Furans. These wholesalers can use Furazone Green in their main systems without ‘filter stumble’.
